John M. Cowden is a partner resident in both the Orange County and San Francisco offices of Manning & Kass, where he focuses his practice on employment law litigation. He also has extensive experience in maritime litigation.
Mr. Cowden received his BA, cum laude, in history from Lewis & Clark College and his JD from University of Oregon School of Law in 1978. While pursuing his law degree, Mr. Cowden participated in the Oregon Law Review as an associate editor.
He is admitted to the United States Supreme Court, United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, California Supreme Court, and all federal district courts in California and Oregon. Mr. Cowden is a member of the California State Bar, Oregon State Bar, Maritime Law Association of the United States and the American Bar Association.
Mr. Cowden has taken dozens of jury trials to final verdict in both state and federal court in addition to serving as lead counsel on a far greater number of court trials, arbitrations, mediations and other ADR proceedings. His litigation and trial practice focuses on management-side representation of employment matters, including defense of discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, retaliation and related claims. He has also successfully tried cases ranging from wrongful death matters to vessel collisions as well as multi-state and international oil spills and environmental casualties. Mr. Cowden is ranked AV Preeminent®, the highest of Martindale-Hubbell's peer-reviewed ratings.
Mr. Cowden has given numerous presentations and published myriad articles relating to various topics in connection with trial practice, employment litigation and maritime law.
